UK deploys digital forensics unit to crack down on smuggled devices in jails

The UK Ministry of Justice has announced a new digital forensics unit and an enlarged digital investigations team to curb criminal activities of smuggling devices into jails.

The ministry said that the new digital forensics lab will be equipped with the latest technology to analyse the increasing number of mobile phones caught hold of in prisons. More than 20,000 mobile devices and SIM cards are seized in jails each year, as per the government.

According to the Ministry of Justice, due to strengthened security, there has been a rise in contraband seizures of smuggled devices in prisons. Furthermore, the ministry said that there is increasing evidence that jail inmates are making use of advanced technology to use the dark web, encrypt their messages and use social media in prisons.
