A concert in Rotterdam has been cancelled after a tip-off from Spanish police about a potential terror threat.
The city’s mayor, Ahmed Aboutaleb, said gas bottles were found in a small van with Spanish number plates found near the venue, where American rock group Allah-Las were due to perform.
Police detained the driver, reported to be Spanish by the El Pais newspaper, and the vehicle was examined by a bomb squad.
Mr Aboutaleb said it was “still to be established that there was a link between the van and the threat”.
The incident is not connected to the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils last week, a source told the Reuters news agency.
A Spanish counter-terrorism investigation official said Spain’s Civil Guard received “an alert indicating the possibility of an attack today in a concert that was going to take place in Rotterdam”.
The decision to call off the show was made at around 7pm local time (6pm UK time), shortly before doors opened at the Maasilo concert hall.
Sky correspondent Mark White said: “At this stage it certainly has all the hallmarks of being a significant story.
“It is certainly significant enough for Spanish police to have notified their colleagues in Holland to tell them there was a specific threat against this venue.”
The incident comes as Spanish police continue their investigation into the twin terror attacks which took place in Spain on 17 August.
