Nigeria foils IS-linked Boko Haram plot against UK and US embassies

A plot by IS-linked Boko Haram members to attack UK and US embassies in Nigeria has been foiled, security forces say.

Nigeria’s department of state services said six suspected jihadists were arrested after they “perfected plans” to attack the embassies and “other western interests” in capital city Abuja.

The security service said one of the suspects linked to the Islamist militant group confessed “his involvement in executing the sinister activities of the group”.

Earlier this month, the US State Department issued an updated travel warning for Nigeria, warning that Boko Haram has targeted government buildings in the Federal Capital Territory and elsewhere.

In August 2011, Boko Haram attacked the UN’s Nigerian headquarters in Abuja with a car bomb, killing 21 people.

The militant group has killed more than 20,000 people and forced another two million to flee their homes in an insurgency in north east Nigeria.
